Difficult to imagine now, but at one time there were any number of shops in Farnhill and Kildwick, and you could buy almost anything you wanted in the village. Here's an amusing tale of stock clearance from the local Co-op. Jonas Whitaker, the manager of the Co-op, was sorting out his stock room when he came across a load of old white chamber pots. They must have been there for years as, by this time, most of the houses had indoor toilets. Anyway, he told the shop-boy, Jim Kitchen, to put them on display in the window - in the hope that they might be able to sell them off cheaply. Later that day, Bella Kitson, who lived in Middleton, came in. "Them chamber pots is going cheap, ain't they Jonas ?", she asked. Jonas explained that he just wanted to get rid of them. "Right," she said, "ahl tek 'af a dozen if y'll send t'lad up wi' 'em. The'll do just reight for meat and tatty pies".
